Recently, I was surprised to hear\u00a0that people in Tunisia yell\u00a0‘Couscous!’<\/strong> before taking a picture. That made me wonder: What do photographers in other countries actually say instead of ‘Say Cheese!’<\/strong> when they want to make someone smile for the camera<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

In my research I learned that\u00a0‘Say Cheese!’\u00a0<\/strong>is one of the most used invitations to smile worldwide. Besides all English-speaking countries ‘say cheese’ is also popular in Belgium, Czech, Greece, Lithuania and Sweden, among others. Even in Japan a somewhat shortened ‘Cheese!’<\/strong> has become the norm. But photographer\u00a0Peter Skjold Petersen,\u00a0on a quest to to find the perfect smiling phrase<\/strong> together with linguist Tim Bowen, has come to the conclusion that the French\u00a0‘Ouistiti!’ <\/strong>(little monkey) guarantees for the most beautiful smiles.<\/p>\n

Another study, however, showed that an\u00a0‘-ah’<\/strong>\u00a0at the end of the ‘say cheese’-phrase makes for a more beautiful mouth in the picture. But as you will see now, very few countries seem to take these findings into account. Instead, cheese, bread and potatoes<\/strong> seem to play quite a big role in all parts of the world when it comes to smiling!<\/p>\n

Argentina (as well as\u00a0most of Spanish Latin America): ‘Whisky!’<\/strong><\/p>\n

Belarus: ‘\u040e\u0441\u043c\u0456\u0445\u043d\u0443\u0441\u044f (Wsmikhnusia)!’<\/strong>\u00a0(Smile!)<\/p>\n

Bulgaria: ‘Zele!’ <\/strong>(Cabbage!)<\/p>\n

China: ‘\u8304\u5b50! (qiezzi)’<\/strong>\u00a0(sounds like\u00a0cheese, but means eggplant)<\/p>\n

Croatia: ‘Pti\u010dica!’<\/strong> (Little bird!)<\/p>\n

Denmark: ‘Sig ‘appelsin!’<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0(Say orange!)<\/p>\n

Estonia: ‘Hernesupp!’<\/strong> (Pea soup!)<\/p>\n

Finland: ‘Muikku!’<\/strong> (Whitefish!)<\/p>\n
